Rejoice or Re-Joyce or Whatever- The Wind Filled In |
|
It was one of those mornings when sails look more like hanging laundry than anything else. Wind conditions improved as the second day of racing for the BVI Spring Regatta wore on. Presley King, sailing with Justin Barton on Justice, Bareboat B, is a local sage when it comes to predicting the winds in the BVI. When asked on the dock this morning what he was looking for today, he replied, “Looking for a little more wind. As soon as the moon raise up, it should get more. The moon will raise up after 11.”

Slow Start but a Hot Finish for Day One of the BVI Spring Regatta |
|
Although no complaints were heard, it was hard to be excited about the day’s weather conditions early on. It was cloudy, rained threatened and it appeared as though what little wind there was might be sucked up by the clouds. Oh ye of little faith. Although the clouds hung over all morning, there was wind from the north ranging from a low of 5 to a high of about 20 and later in the day, the sun came shining brightly over the 103 boat fleet on the first day of racing the 2010 BVI Spring Regatta.

And They're Off |
|
The day dawned with perfect conditions for the forty-six boats racing in the Bitter End Cup, the first day’s racing of the 2010 BVI Sailing Festival. In four classes, the boats beat from Nanny Cay Marina in Tortola to the North Sound on the east end of Virgin Gorda. Boats and crews ranged from the sleek, sexy and professional to those who were just along for the fun of it, from the stripped out carbon Frers 44’s to a Moorings 4700 towing a dinghy, making their way east to the finish line and the parties at the Bitter End Yacht Club.

Another First for BVI Spring Regatta |
|
Green, the color of the ecology movement, is the “in” color and there’s hope that this is not just a passing fad but rather signifies a long-term change in lifestyles for many throughout the world. Regardless of the fact that the BVI has no pump-out stations, the BVI Spring Regatta has creatively embraced the concept and in 2008 made some inroads by recycling glass and plastic. Then, in 2009, the event went well beyond the initial steps taken in 2008 and made a full-fledged commitment to the cause. With Jane Bakewell, long time BVI resident, writer and conservation enthusiast leading the way, the ‘Sailing Towards Clean and Green’ campaign was mounted. These efforts were so remarkable that Sailors for the Sea, an organization committed to protecting the oceans and sponsors of the Clean Regattas Certification Program, awarded the 2009 BVI Spring Regatta the first Silver certificate to ever be awarded to any regatta.

The 38th annual BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, March 30 - April 5, 2009, could not work without the support of the local community and every year more local businesses involve themselves with the community’s largest sporting event. This highly anticipated event not only entertains, but also plays a significant role in the BVI economy as the week attracts more off-island visitors and dollars to the local community than any other sporting event throughout the year. New to the fold for the 2009 event are Victor International, developers and owners of Oil Nut Bay and North Sound Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda and International Motors, offering new and pre owned automobile, parts, service and rentals. Returning for a second year is Meridian Construction Company, specializing in marine works, pilings, structural steel erection and general construction.

2009 BVI Spring Regatta Takes the Clean-Green Plunge |
|
For those of us who love to sail the sea is a sanctuary. It is our place of adventure, our home away from home and our playpen. But two comprehensive studies — by the 2003 Pew Oceans Commission and the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy — have made it dramatically apparent that our beloved ocean is severely threatened. With that in mind, the 2009 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival has joined forces withSailors for the Sea to reduce the pollution generated by the regatta and to promote ocean awareness to others. March 30 – April 5, 2009, the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival with presenting sponsor Nanny Cay Marina and Resort will be going “clean and green”.

The numbers for the 2009 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, March 30 – April 5, look healthy and regatta organizers have reason to believe that although 2009 will not be a record breaker, it will be a good year.

VI Raceweek, a natural combination of the St. Thomas International Rolex Regatta, BVI Sailing Festival and BVI Spring Regatta, is back by popular demand. Add to the mix of racing and partying in the tropics, prizes for winning the IRC division of a week's holiday on St. Thomas at the Frenchman's Cove Resort and the CSA division prize of an all inclusive week's stay at the Bitter End Yacht Club in the BVI, and it's no wonder that VI Raceweek is too tempting to pass up.

BVI Spring Regatta 2007- Day Two: Grueling and Great |
|
The sun shone most of the day, there was no rain and winds from 20 – 30 miles an hour with rough seas. Conditions put sailors and boats to a true test. As always, when the wind blows this hard, there is some carnage on the race course but crews returned to the Nanny Cay, the event host, tired, salty and with some great sea stories to tell. When asked how was it out there, Mike Masters, sailing Black Pearl in the IC24 class summed it up, “Grueling and great.”

Plenty of Wind, Rain and Excitement for the First Day of Racing |
|
It’s been a wild and wonderful time for racing in the first day of competition in the 2007 BVI Spring Regatta. Wind was not lacking but rather too much for some boats that struggled to keep from broaching in gusts up to 26 knots. Others reveled in the brisk breeze and turned wind into pure power. Sailing in over 15 knots of breeze from the northeast, rather than the prevailing southeast, under cloudy skies and intermittent rain, boats on the Norman course sailed one race in the morning and one in the afternoon, the Cooper Race area completed three races and the one-design racers completed five.

Sailors Battle the Elements and the Time Limit for the Nanny Cay Cup |
|
Battling the elements of light air and rain, sailors beat their way back to Nanny Cay in the last leg of the BVI Sailing Festival. Although given the prevailing breeze, my money would have been for the fleet to coast downhill from Bitter End to Nanny Cay, instead, what little wind there was, shifted from the north east to the south west. Bob Phillips, Chairman of the BVI Sailing Festival remarked, “This year the boats beat up to Bitter End and back. It was only two years ago when we had just he opposite situation, and boats sailed downwind up and then downwind back to Nanny Cay. I guess that makes us even now.”

Bitter End Yacht Club. Today, the official layday for the BVI Sailing Festival, every sailing dinghy and Hunter 216 that Bitter End has was out on the water participating in either the Nations’ Challenge Cup or dinghy racing. Competition began in the morning with about ten knots of breeze but was delayed due to some torrential showers in the early afternoon. The weather cleared and, with very light and fluky wind, sailors took the boats from shore around 4PM to compete in two more races.

BVI Spring Regatta Follows Volvo Ocean Race Lead |
|
The BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, presented by Nanny Cay and held this year March 26 – April 1, 2007, is taking a cue from some of the well-established one design classes and providing on the water umpiring for the very competitive IC24 class. Using ISAF’s “Experimental Appendix Q” umpired fleet racing rules, Bob Phillips, event chairman, said, “This will be a wonderful learning experience for the racers as the on-water umpires will define the line you can’t cross on the water, not in a room well after the fact; you cross that line and the umpire either lets you exonerate with a penalty turn or, in the case of a serious breech of the rules, immediately disqualifies you from that race.”

2006 BVI Spring Regatta, |
|
This year’s BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, presented by Nanny Cay Marina, March 27 – April 2, 2006, hosted a record 154 boats ranging in size from15’ Lasers to the Riechel Pugh 75’ Titan XII. Winds were light but enough to support six days of exceptionally competitive sailing throughout the BVI. Organizers feared the worst, in terms of wind – or lack there of - but in the end, there was only one race, on one day, on one course, in which not all the boats finished before the time limit.

Wind was the word on everybody’s mind as skippers and crews aboard a record 154 yachts wondered if they would compete on the seas or retreat to a rum punch on this first day of sailing in the 35th annual BVI Spring Regatta. Lay Day Bitter End Style |
|
Although the weather looked a bit iffy early on today, the second day of the BVI Sailing Festival, the precursor to the BVI Spring Regatta, turned out to be nearly picture perfect. Sailors had their choice of activities at the Bitter End in North Sound, but many chose to participate in the one design racing in Lasers, Hobie Waves or Hobie Getaways or Nation’s Challenge Cup, sailed in Bitter End’s fleet of 216’s. The sailing activities were so popular that by the end of the day, Bitter End had all of their 32 one-design dinghies racing in North Sound.

Race One of BVI Sailing Festival Starts Slow and Ends Fast |
|
Day One of the BVI Sailing Festival, the low pressure warmup to the BVI Spring Regatta, started off looking like a bust. Before the start of the race, the course was shortened, sending the boats directly from Nanny Cay to Bitter End, by-passing a mark at The Baths and several islands off the north coast of Virgin Gorda. The race committee started the three classes in five knots of breeze but as the boats approached the western end of Virgin Gorda a squall rolled in kicking the winds up to approximately 20 mph.

Willy-T Run Canceled, Racing Continues |

For the last day of the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival presented by Nanny Cay Marina, the "Willy-T Run" was canceled. This run to the infamous floating bar at Norman Island had become a dangerous habit the last couple of years due to lack of wind. Instead the fleet went racing much to the consternation of those grinders needing a little light libation after back to back racing in the first two days of the regatta.
